Early Life and Education Before Apple

Steve Jobs was born in San Francisco in 1955 and was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs. He grew up in the Silicon Valley area and attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon, for one semester before dropping out, though he continued to audit classes including calligraphy, which later influenced Apple's typography. Jobs returned to California in the early 1970s and explored alternative communities, including the All One Farm commune in Oregon. He worked as a technician at Atari in 1974, where he was tasked with creating a circuit board for the arcade game Breakout. This role connected him with Steve Wozniak and marked the beginning of their collaboration.

Atari and the Breakout Project

Before co-founding Apple, Jobs worked at Atari and was assigned to design a simplified circuit board for the Breakout arcade game. He partnered with Wozniak to reduce the number of chips, and Atari rewarded them with bonuses based on the chip count saved.

In 1974, Jobs traveled to India seeking spiritual enlightenment and studied Zen Buddhism. Upon returning, he resumed work at Atari and began attending meetings of the Homebrew Computer Club, where Wozniak demonstrated early personal computer designs.

Co-Founding Apple Computer

Jobs and Wozniak founded Apple Computer on April 1, 1976, in the Jobs family garage. Jobs focused on marketing and business strategy, while Wozniak engineered the Apple I computer. They sold Jobs' Volkswagen van and Wozniak's HP-65 calculator to fund initial production.

Apple's early success with the Apple II launched the company into the personal computer market. Jobs' prior experience at Atari and his exposure to the Homebrew Computer Club directly informed Apple's product philosophy and design approach.
